MUNFORD MAYOR DWAYNE COLE WINS TENNESSEE HISTORICAL COMMISSION AWARD

The Tennessee Historical Commission awarded Munford Mayor Dwayne Cole the Commissioner’s Special Commendation for his efforts to revitalize the Downtown Business District.

Mayor Cole’s focused efforts began approximately eight years ago with the transformation of a piece of property into what is known today as Veterans Plaza. Now the jewel of Downtown, Veterans Plaza has hosted farmers markets, concerts, and other events since its opening in summer 2025.

As plans for the Plaza went underway, Mayor Cole established the Munford Downtown Development Commission. This group of volunteers, under the mayor’s oversight, developed a grant program for Downtown businesses to make façade and infrastructure improvements. To date, fourteen properties have undergone improvements using more than $450,000 grant dollars. The properties, the oldest of which date back to the 1920s, kept their historic charm while the businesses within capitalized on their transformation.

This promotion of historic preservation earned Munford Mayor Dwayne Cole the Commissioner’s Special Commendation from the Tennessee Historical Commission.
